CHAPTER EIGHT

WHEN I WALKED through the door of my house, I let out the nervous giggle I’d been holding in all night. Jen was sitting on the couch watching a movie.

“Nora!” she sang with a big smile. When Jen drank, she got nicer to her friends and meaner to her enemies. And those two qualities escalated exponentially until she got too tired and passed out.

“Wow, you cleaned up so fast! Sorry I wasn’t here to help,” I said.

“Patricia helped!”

“What a lady,” I said.

“You always see the best in people. I admire that about you.”

“Are you giving me a corny compliment?” I asked, confused.

“Like, I think you’re a good person,” she said.

“Oh my God, it was a corny compliment. You’ve definitely had too much to drink. Let’s get you to bed.”

She snorted, stumbled to her room, and flopped on her bed.

“How did it go?” she asked as she closed her eyes and curled up to a pillow.

I pulled off her shoes and set them next to her nightstand. “It was awesome. He’s so wonderful. He’s—” I let out a happy sigh, “he’s perfect.”

Jen whistled. “Get it girl.”

“This is so exciting. This is the most excited I’ve been, possibly ever.”

“So, how many more parties are we going to have to throw?” she asked.

“You know, I think I can take it from here. Thank you so much for doing this for me. I know it’s a little ridiculous.”

“You’re worth it,” she said, reaching out to pat my knee, but missing by several feet.
